The Pokémon Company has announced Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet, the two new entries in the long-running Pokémon RPG series. The second mainline Pokémon game on the Switch after Sword & Shield, this 9th Generation of Pokemon will be launching on 18th November and pre-orders are now available.
Setting
The upcoming Pokémon games are set in the region of Paldea, a place that seems to be based on the real-world Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, a region that includes Spain and Portugal.
According to The Pokémon Company, Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet will see the series taking a "new evolutionary step, allowing you to explore freely in a richly expressed open world."
There are several unique locals across the Paldea region, and we've got a lovely look at some of the places you'll get to explore in the game.
Open World Region
The Pokemon Company has now confirmed that Generation IX will be "the first open-world RPGs in The Series", where "You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you're free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to."
Previously, The Pokemon Company gave some pretty clear hints that these games would be open-world, saying that "you’ll be able to experience the true joy of the Pokémon series — battling against wild Pokémon to catch them — now in an open-world game that players of any age can enjoy." Now we know that's 100% the case!
Because of the open-world maps, you'll have a minimap on the screen while exploring the world of Paldea, which should come in handy for hunting down specific Pokémon on the field.
Photo Mode
Pokémon is finally getting its own dedicated photo mode. You're no longer restricted to taking snaps in set locations like in Arceus, or simply relying on the Switch's native screenshot function. Now, you can pause and take selfies wherever you want with your Pocket Monsters!
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Three Story Paths
Not only is Generation IX going to be open-world, but we also know that there will be three different story paths to take in the upcoming games. And they're all literally different paths!
Victory Road will be the most familiar to Pokémon trainers, and will see you take on the traditional eight Gym Leader gauntlet One twist to this long-standing formula, however, is that you'll be able to tackle the Gyms in any order you want! And you'll be able to take on the Pokémon League at the end of it all too, of course.
The second is Path of Legends, which will see you hunting down rare Herba Mystica, ingredients which are apparently meant to restore your health immediately. These herbs are guarded by Titan Pokémon, giant Pokémon (think Alpha Pokémon in Legends: Arceus).
The last story path is ★ Starfall Street ★, where you'll get to challenge Generation IX's 'villainous' (see, rebellious) team in a gauntlet of battles. Once you get through the barrage, you'll face off against the group's boss.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: Multiplayer
One more thing that The Pokémon Company has been forward about with this upcoming release is that you'll be able to play Pokémon Scarlet & Violet in four-player multiplayer. This is a first for the series, though we don't know if this will be for both online or local multiplayer yet.

Trainer Battles
Trainer battles out in the wild and on the various routes have always been initiated in the mainline Pokémon series. But Scarlet & Violet is changing that.
With Generation IX, trainers will no longer stop you in their sights the minute they see you — instead, you'll need to interact with them to engage in battle. No more surprise Pokémon battles, now you're the one with the power in your hands.
Battle Stadium
The Battle Stadium from Pokémon Sword & Shield is returning! This mode will allow you to play four different modes — Casual, Ranked, Online Competitions, and Rental Teams.
For Online Competitions, you can play either Friendly Competitions, which are set up by other trainers, or enter Official Competitions, where rules may already be set up by Game Freak.
Terastal Phenomenon Pokémon
Generation IX's unique mechanic is known as the Terastal Phenomenon. Pokémon across the Paldea region can transform into sparkling, glimmering gem-like creatures. The Pokémon will also get a rather big jewel or crown on its head, depending on its Tera type. Terastallized Pokémon can be encountered in the wild by finding a sparkling, glowing Pokémon on the field and walking up to it.
Every single Pokémon has a Tera type, and the same Pokémon can even have different ones — so not all Eevee will be a Normal-type Tera type. A Tera type can be one of the existing 18 types in-game. You can force a rival Pokémon out of its Terastallized form by simply doing enough damage to it.
To Terastallize a Pokémon, you'll need a Tera Orb, and you can only use it once it's charged up with energy. After using it in battle, it'll run out, so you'll need to go and recharge it at a Pokémon Center or find some crystals out in the world to fill it up.
